I have been with HostGator for about a year now. Compared to my last host they are a lot better. Not only are they cheaper priced but they have excellent customer support. Every time I have contacted them I have had a response within 24 hours. This is excellent since they are one of the fastest growing hosts on the Internet today and have close to 20,000 members.
I have the baby account for both of my two websites. This is their smallest package. I have access to cPanel and many other services such as unlimited disc space and bandwidth, MySQL, Ruby, Joomla and WordPress (WP) hosting and numerous other features. I use WP and upload my files through FileZilla. Although FileZilla is not affiliated with Hostgator, customer service has helped me a few times with it.
I would not recommend using HostGator’s free templates. Most of them are limited in what you can do. As well, the templates are very small and do not take up but a portion of the monitor. I wasted a lot of time designing my site and was devastated when I viewed it live.
Every once in a while I get a CSR (customer service representative) that does not understand my problem. Usually it takes a bit but I will ask to escalate the problem and they will. This has happened three times. I used their customer service often when I first launched my two sites. So three times is not a bad average. Overall, most of the CSR’s are quire knowledgeable and very polite. When you use their chat there is also a survey you get via email to grade the CSR’s performance.
On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give HostGator a 4. Not a 5 because of their templates and their higher price compared too many hosts out there. I am happy with their service and do not plan on changing soon.
